I’m pretty sure I’m going to be fangirling about this book for the rest of my life. It was absolutely phenomenal. Without a doubt the best non fiction of 2021 (honestly if not ever), and up there with the best reads of 2021 too! Candice Brathwaite has truly smashed it out the park.
I Am Not Your Baby Mother is an incredible book about Candice’s experience of becoming a black mother in Britain. Struck by the complete and utter lack of representation for any kind of mother other than white - she set up Make Motherhood Diverse @makemotherhooddiverse (definitely check it out) but the book is about so much more than that. We follow Candice as she grows up in London, surrounded by stereotypes, micro-aggressions and assumptions about her experiences with motherhood. It was beautiful to read such a raw account of her life and so insightful. I already love Candice Brathwaite but if it was possible to love her anymore, I do now.
I would totally recommend this to anyone, but if you don’t read a lot of non-fiction but are looking to get into it, this book is for you! Benardine Evaristo’s comment on the cover is totally correct - accessible and written from the heart. While covering some really important and heart wrenching themes, it still felt like an easy read? The sign of impeccable writing in my eyes. I laughed out loud and I cried while reading this book and I cannot recommend it enough, if you couldn’t already tell from this raving review! Get your hands on it now!
