Animal, Animal, Animal... this book truly slaps you round the face and kicks you to the dirt but you still find yourself asking for more.
Joan witnesses the suicide of an ex married lover while sitting across a table with another married man, but who was that bullet truly meant for? With her parents ashes in doggy bags and their lives packed up in boxes she flees to LA to find the one person she has left.
Joan find solace in her ability to seduce and reduce men to their animalistic instincts, her life punctuated by the men who cannot resist her yet still finding herself utterly and completely alone. Like the coyotes prowling her housing complex, each new character brings with them a blood thirsty drive to fulfil their desires, their toxicity rubbing off and moulding one another until the lines of morality are completely blurred. Every time I thought I had a grasp on the character’s true psyche I was punched in the gut for getting comfortable.
To say more would take away from the hypnotic, clammy and gut wrenching ride that is this book, I honestly cannot pinpoint a reading experience quite like this. Approach with a strong stomach and a seatbelt.
