Chelsea Joy Handler is a comedian, actress, writer, television host, producer, and activist who lives in Los Angeles, California. She is mostly known for her unapologetic risqué personality and late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately. She was born on February 25, 1975 in Livingston, New Jersey. Handler’s mother, Rita Stoecker, and her husband, Seymour Handler, raised their 6 children in Reform Judaism. Stoecker was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in the late 1950’s, and Handler’s father is an American-born Jewish man who used to work as a used-car dealer. The famous comedian is the youngest of two sisters and three brothers who helped her mold her comedic powers at an early age. Her siblings would always take her to their high school parties because of her sparky attitude and entertaining personality.
Despite going through many hardships throughout life, Handler worked hard and made a name for herself. The TV star decided to move to Los Angeles at 19 years old to pursue a career in acting. In 2002, Handler landed her first gig on the Oxygen network’s show, Girls Behaving Badly. This hidden-camera show revealed Handler’s “brassy” demeanor and “self-deprecating style” which later drew the attention of thousands of fans. In July 2007, Handler began hosting her late-night show, Chelsea Lately, which aired more than 1,000 episodes before ending in 2014. The TV host moved on to creating content for Netflix and developed a comedic documentary series called Chelsea Does in 2016. That same year she aired a freewheeling talk show called Chelsea which ended the following year.
As much as Handler is a TV queen, she is also a New York Times best selling author. She published three books, My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. Read more to find out what Chelsea Handler’s books of choice are!
